About

UC Riverside undergraduates who volunteer in the SBFC Undergraduate Volunteer Division will have opportunities to gain both clinical and community service experience through engaging patients in a clinical setting and in engaging community members of San Bernardino in a community setting.

In-Clinic Roles:
Clinic Operations: Members rotating through this role will be part of a team on clinic days that will focus on preparing patients for their visit with their provider by obtaining their vitals and history, triaging the patient appropriately based on their needs, and pre-chiefing to their medical student.

Front Office: Members rotating through this role will be a part of a team on clinic days that will check-in both new and returning patients, upload patient lab results into their chart, check-out patients, conduct the Satisfaction Survey, and schedule patients for their follow up appointments (based on the recommendations from the healthcare provider).

Back Office: Members rotating through this role will be a part of a team on clinic days that will play a part in checking the supply inventory and keeping track of this on a Google Spreadsheet (noting which items we are running low on), ordering patient labs utilizing the Quest portal, and checking and recording the presence of supplies for each patient room at the conclusion of the clinic day.

Health Education: Members rotating through this role will be part of a team on clinic days that will speak to and educate patients about a variety of health topics during their visit depending on their educational needs and will connect patients to relevant resources in the community.

Social Services: Members rotating through this role will be a part of a team on clinic days that will engage with patients and understand their social needs, while utilizing the Connect IE tool to find resources in the nearby area for them.

Medical Spanish Translator: Members rotating through this role will be part of a team of fluent Spanish speakers who will be the translators between our undergraduate/medical student volunteers and the patients during each clinic day. They will be responsible for chiefing with their medical student to the attending physician and assisting the different stations in clinic with translation for Spanish-speaking patients.
NOTE: You MUST speak Spanish fluently to take on this in-clinic role.

Out-of-Clinic Committees:
Administration: This team is tasked with the administrative responsibilities that are needed to keep the organization and clinic running smoothly. Members on this team will assist the Secretary in making sure the Central Database (our team Google Drive) is organized, produce and respond to emails, and other administrative tasks. Members of this team will also work with patients to ensure that they have their appointments scheduled, have an effective plan of care, receive prescribed treatment, and have an advocate for services and plans needed during and after their visit.

Community Outreach: Responsible for connecting our clinic with the community members in order to recruit more patients as well as grow the reputation of SBFC with the San Bernardino area. Establishing a connection with the local government, businesses, and other organizations will be a large part of the job as a way of spreading the awareness of SBFC and the services it can provide the citizens of San Bernardino.

Finance: Tasked with setting up fundraising opportunities on and off campus, writing and obtaining grants, as well as creating budgets that will allow the clinic to progress and grow in an economically feasible manner. The raising of money will enable us to fund further outreach mediums and obtain new supplies to be used in clinic, contributing to our goal of serving as many patients as possible with the highest standard of care.

Health Education Development: A team that will be responsible for developing educational materials, presentations, and programs that will be used for patient health education purposes for during clinic and for out in the community. This team will develop the aforementioned educational materials for a variety of health topics, especially those that address the most common health disparities in the San Bernardino region.

Research: A team that works to establish and conduct studies that help us better understand the population we are working with as well as the performance of the clinic/organization as a whole through quality assurance measures. This team will also test and implement programs into clinic with the goal of optimizing patient’s experiences and outcomes. The research team will be steadfastly working to obtain research grants and submit presentations to health conferences to spread the findings from our clinic.
